How to Deploy

Deploying your content to a device

This section discusses how to deploy your content to your device for testing and field use.

To complete a deployment, you must have the Vernacular app installed on your device.

There are two ways to deploy your content: direct download, which requires the tablet to have a reliable wi fi connection, and export / import, which requires a USB drive, OTG adaptor, and access to a laptop. Both processes are covered below.

Direct Download

  1. Make sure your app is connected to a wi fi network.
  2. On your app's homescreen, click "Download Content."
  3. If necessary, enter your app ID at the prompt.
  4. Wait a little bit while the initial lesson lists are pulled down.
  5. On the download homepage, either select "download all lessons" or download an individual lesson.
  6. Return to the app creation page by clicking the "back" button.

Export and Import

The export and import method requires more steps, as well as a thumb drive and OTG adapter.

That said, it allows tablets to import content without a network connection.

The content comes from a directory that was downloaded as a zip from the app page.

The process consists of the following steps:

  1. Exporting the content after each content update
  2. Downloading the content as a zip
  3. Transfer of Content to USB
  4. Import of Content to Tablet

These steps are covered in detail below.

Zip Export and Download

Follow this process if you have just created or updated content that needs to be included in the app.

  1. Go to your app page.
  2. Click the “Create Main Files” button.
  3. When that is done, click "Add Lesson Files."
  4. Click on the resulting link in the green area and download the zip.
  5. Extract the zip. The directory should say "vernacular."
Zip Download

Follow this process if you have packaged the app previously and the content has not changed.

  1. Go to the SteppingStone Create BASA app page
  2. Click on the “download content” link and download the file
  3. Extract the file. The directory should say “vernacular” (all lowercase)

Note: if there is a number (ex. “vernacular 22”) it just means that you did this download & extraction process more than once. Simply delete the number from the filename.

Content Transfer to USB
  1. Plug in USB device to computer that contains the downloaded and unzipped Vernacular directory.
  2. Move “vernacular” directory onto USB drive.
  3. Make sure the directory is at the topmost level of the USB, and make sure the title is “vernacular” with no numbers.
  4. Check the contents of the copied vernacular folder in the USB directory.
  5. Safely eject the USB drive.
Content Import
  1. Attach USB to OTG Adapter
  2. Plug USB into tablet
  3. Start Vernacular app
  4. Wait for prompt to import. Click “import."
  5. Wait until it is complete
